Desperation подразумевает отчаяние, находящее выражение в безрассудных действиях, в отчаянных поступках: feeling of despair, но fight of desperation. To drive to despair означает 'довести до отчаяния, до состояния безнадежности'; to drive to desperation имеет значение 'довести до бешенства, привести в ярость' и характеризуется разговорной окраской.
